VALENTIN SILWESTROW, People’s Artist of Ukraine, laureate of the Taras Shevchenko award.
Born in 1937 in Kiev, he is the greatest living Ukrainian composer.

In the mid-1960s, Silwestrow became one of the most important figures in the Kiev musical avant-garde (along with Igor Błażkow, Leonid Hrabowski and Volodymyr Huba). He used dodecaphonic, aleatoric and sonoric techniques. The works of Silvestrov began to be played by such musicians as Gidon Kremer, Alexei Lubimov and Ivan Monighetti. His works were criticized by the official Soviet music community. The composer was expelled from the Union of Soviet Composers, incl. because of his protest after the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia. In the 1970s, the composer began to depart from avant-garde means of expression, turning towards tonality, 17th-19th century aesthetics and sacred music.

MIECZYSŁAW WEINBERG. Composer and pianist. Born on December 8, 1919 in Warsaw, died on February 26, 1996 in Moscow. He left a huge output: 153 opus pieces and dozens of paid work for film, circus and radio. More than a third of his creative legacy consists of works for orchestra, including 22 symphonies, concertos for violin, cello, flute, clarinet and trumpet, and cantatas with soloists, choir and orchestra. Among the 70 chamber works, the most numerous group are 17 string quartets. He composed almost 30 series of songs for poetry in three languages: Polish, Yiddish and Russian. He was most often inspired by the poems of Julian Tuwim.
