A few words about our guest:
Movement Educator, Dancer, Facilitator
Vega Luukkonen
is a dancer, performance artist, and massage therapist from Finland. She studied dance and theatre pedagogy in Helsinki at the Finnish Theatre Academy, where she completed her master’s degree in 2008. She currently co-leads ROOTED IN MOTION, a 10-month modular course in contact improvisation in Berlin, with her long-time colleague, Hugh Stanier.
Vega is an expert in contact improvisation (CI) and teaches at festivals, events, and workshops worldwide. She has been dancing contact improvisation since her teens, initially developing her practice within the Finnish contact improvisation community. After graduating, she began traveling and teaching internationally, gaining over 30 years of experience in contact improvisation.
Her movement is inspired by contemporary dance, somatics, aikido, floorwork, soft acrobatics, partner work, and developmental movement patterns. Recently, she has become increasingly interested in a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles of contact improvisation, which leads to fine-tuning, attention to detail, deep listening, and presence.
She seeks ways to facilitate understanding of the fundamentals of movement while remaining connected to one’s own interests and journey of exploration, where curiosity can be most vivid and stimulate discovery.
Her classes are playful, physical, enjoyable, and creative. She also works with scores and group compositions, expanding from duets to trios and group compositions,
also considering solo improvisation a key element of contact improvisation. She understands dance as a combination of technique and fluidity; form and freedom; being and doing.
