Kalarippayattu workshop, a traditional Indian martial art with Karolina / June 28, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Kalarippayattu workshop, a traditional Indian martial art.

Kalari is a holistic discipline that combines intensive movement training with internal focus, traditional rituals and healing elements (e.g. kalari massage).

We will learn the basics of two styles of kalarippayattu: vadakkan (mostly northern) and thekkan (southern), both of which originate from southern India, the state of Kerala.

During the workshop we will learn:
– traditional kalari training with 5 breathing exercises (including: warm-up of the whole body, strengthening, stretching, coordination exercises)
– several of the eight traditional animal positions called ashtavadivu
– at least 4 (out of 12) exercises/leg swings characteristic of kalari
– the beginning of an intensive and spatial meypayattu sequence (maybe the whole one, depending on the psycho-physical abilities of the participants)
– basics of working with a long kettukari stick
– 1 or 2 kalari movement sequences from the southern style
