Pizzica i Tammuriata to dwa najbardziej popularne tańce włoskie w stylu „Tarantella”.
Tarantelle to tradycyjne tańce z południa Włoch, a dokładnie – z Salento, obszaru na południowym krańcu Apulii i z regionu położonego wokół wulkanu Wezuwiusza, w pobliżu Neapolu.
Korzenie Pizzica sięgają dionizyjskich świąt i pogańskiego mitu pająka tarantula. Według powszechnego przekonania, „pizzicu” (ugryzienie) pająka wywołuje wahania nastroju, a nawet stan głębokiej depresji, który może zostać uzdrowiony jedynie poprzez szalony taniec. Osoba ugryziona przez tarantulle tańczy do rytmu tamburyn, wchodząc w ten sposób w uzdrawiający trans. Tańczy się do upadłego, czyli do momentu, w którym umysł ugryzionej osoby zostaje wyzwolony od „choroby”. Z upływem wieków, ten szamański rytuał nabrał bardziej uroczystej formy, która rozprzestrzeniła się do innych regionów południowych Włoch. Ze wszystkich tych styli, najbardziej znanym jest niewątpliwie Tarantella.
Tradycyjna Pizzica jest tańczona w parze. Nie muszą to być jednak partnerzy płci przeciwnej. Bardzo często możemy spotkać dwie kobiety tańczące ze sobą.
Tammurriata natomiast ma bardzo stare korzenie. Jest to taniec ludowy, któryodwołuje sie do tradycji przodków i czerpie z elementów przyrody.
Taniec przeobraża się w grę zalotów, harmonii, wyzwań, odmowy, przy rytmie castagnette. Uwalnia całą energię wewnętrzną człowieka, jego siłę, fizyczną odporność i przeobraża się w jedną z największych i najbardziej autentycznych demonstracji zmysłowości.

Workshop of Pizzica and Tammurriata (English)
Pizzica and Tammuriata are two of the most popular italian „tarantelle”, traditional dances from the South of Italy, respectively from Salento, the area located at the southern end of Puglia (Apulia) and areas around the Vesuvius volcano, near Napoli.
Pizzica’s timeless roots go back to the Dionysiac festivals and the pagan myth of the tarantula spider, once a common presence in the sun-scorched fields all over the Mediterranean coast. According to popular belief, the “pizzicu” (bite) of the spider induces an altered state of mind that can only be healed by a frenetic dance to the relentless beat of the tambourine, until trance is achieved and the mind liberated. With the passing of the centuries, this shamanic ritual transformed itself into more festive forms that spread to other regions of Southern Italy. Of all those forms, the most famous is undoubtedly the tarantella.
The traditional pizzica is danced while embracing a partner. This hug need not necessarily involve two individuals of opposite sexes, and often two women can be seen dancing together. Nowadays it has become rare to see two men dancing an entire pizzica. An exception with a pizzica between two men can still be found in the town of Ostuni, where one of the two men who dance jokingly pretends to be a woman. Another exception is where two men pretend to be engaged in a duel.
The tammurriata has very old origins. Already some mosaics in Pompeii depict what seems to be a sort of tammurriata. It is a rural dance, tied to fertility, with agricultural work evoked in the steps. Throughout the transformation of seasons, the tradition connects the existentialism of the local population with their everyday social lives and work, the earth, the elements of nature, and their ancestors.
The dance with all its courting, harmonies, challenges, refusals, coupling, embroidered by rhythmic Castagnette, releases all the internal man energy, its strength and its fisical resistence, and one of the greatest and most genuine sensuality demonstration. It does not exhist time limit to end the dance if not exhaustion.

Chiara Scarfato
An energetic, friendly and confident young linguistic, photographer and dance teacher passionate about traditional dances from the South and Centre of Italy. Chiara started to be interested in folk dances in the 2008 during a trip in the deepest south of Italy, when she saw for the first time Pizzica, a popular Italian folk dance, originally from the Salento peninsula. From that moment she didn’t stop to look for all the aspects of the multifaceted word of the traditional music, travelling around festivals and traditional events, meeting old musicians and expert dancers, the authentic bearers of the tradition, experiencing personally the original environment from which are coming the traditional dances of Puglia, Calabria, Campania, Sicilia and Marche. She has shared the knowledge she absorbed in seven years of travelling, learning and researching in few workshops made in her hometown and in Krakow, where she is currently living working mostly as a teacher of Italian language and cooking.
