Foundations of Contact Improvisation
Foundations of Contact Improvisation – Damian Oterman, Agata Romankiewicz
We invite you to a Contact Improvisation Foundations class – a group dedicated to individuals who have never experienced KI before or are relatively new to this world and would like to brush up on the fundamentals of KI in a calm and safe environment.
We will meet with the beginners group on THURSDAYS EVERY BI-WEEK at 7:30 PM
(STARTING 09/17/2026)
Contact Improvisation Foundations is a regular Contact Improvisation practice that combines fun, development of basic skills, body exploration, and knowledge exchange.
Through movement, touch, weight, gravity, balance, and improvisation, we explore the foundations of Contact Improvisation—learning not only how to move, but above all how to feel, listen, react, and make decisions in contact.
Each meeting combines movement practice, exercises and scores, technical tools, and short moments of knowledge sharing and reflection.
FOUNDATIONS WE EXPLORE
Body awareness · muscle tone · gravity · weight · balance · falling · touch · listening · communication · consent · improvisation
Technique is a tool for expanding possibilities, not an end in itself.
We learn to recognize what is happening in our own bodies, how we organize weight and tension, and how we can respond to another body without having to control what happens next.
KNOWLEDGE THROUGH EXPERIENCE
Practice is interwoven with brief moments of knowledge sharing, observation, and reflection.
We ask not only “what am we doing?” but also:
What am I feeling? What is changing? How does gravity work? Where does movement come from? How does the body communicate through touch? How can we co-create movement rather than control it?
PLAY AS A WAY OF LEARNING
Not everything has to be serious, correct, or perfect.
There is room for curiosity, experimentation, humor, mistakes, and spontaneity.
Play is not an adjunct to learning—it is one of the ways we learn through our bodies.
FOR WHOM?
For those just beginning their Contact Improvisation journey, as well as for those who want to return to the basics and look at them from a new perspective.
Prior experience in Contact Improvisation is not required.
Contact is always an invitation, never an obligation. Each participant can choose their own method and level of participation.
